“WALK OF FAITH”

Rev. Dr. Leslie D. Braxton

Brothers and Sisters, the 3rd Anniversary of The New Beginnings Christian Fellowship is quickly approaching. Anniversary weekend 2008 is scheduled for Saturday, August 2nd and Sunday, August 3rd.

This year’s special anniversary feature will be what we are calling:

“THE WALK OF FAITH”

What is the “Walk of Faith”?

Firstly, it will be a commemorative walk that will retrace the spiritual journey of the NBCF congregation from our humble beginnings in the Cafeteria of the Renton High School to our future site on Benson Road where the Towns of Renton and Kent come together. Specifically, on Saturday, August 2nd at 10:00 am we will all gather in the Renton, High School Cafeteria, where we held our first public worship service on August 5th 2005. We will then walk, by the hundreds, from the Renton High School 4.5 miles to the Lindberg High School where we have held our public worship service since July of 2006. After a brief pause for prayer, celebration and physical rejeuvenation, we will then continue the “WALK OF FAITH” from the Lindberg High School 3.5 additional miles to the future site of the New Beginnings Christian Fellowship on 192nd and Benson Road. There we will spend the balance of the afternoon enjoying an outdoor celebration under the big tent that will include music, food, tours and having a whole lotta fun with our new neighbors and with each other.

Secondly, the “Walk of Faith” is designed to be a major fund raising event that will provide much needed revenue for the completion of the Phase I renovations to the facility at our new site. Specifically, we are looking for a minimum of 300 NBCF members (or their designee) to participate in the “Walk of Faith”. Each participant will have to identify family, friends, neighbors and colleagues who will sponsor their participation in the “Walk of Faith” in amounts of $25, $50, $100 or more. Each “Walk of Faith” participant is asked to aspire to raise a total of no less than $1,000 for the “Walk of Faith”. Together, our goal for the “Walk of Faith” event is to raise at least $300,000 for the new site renovations.

Now, I know that $1,000 may sound at first like a whole lot of money. But if you think about it in another way, $1,000 is only 10 people sponsoring you at $100 a piece. Or, $1,000 is only 20 people sponsoring you at just $50 a piece. Or, $1,000 is 40 people sponsoring you at $25 a piece. Or $1,000 can be any combination of any of these or other amounts. I think you get the picture. With all of the months of May, June, and July to get ready, each of us can sure identify enough family members, friends, neighbors and professional colleagues to raise our $1,000 toward that $300,000 grand total.

Now, just in case you may be saying to yourself, “I would love to participate in the “Walk of Faith” but I’m just not able to walk over 8 miles at this season of my life.” Well, we have thought of you too, because we need everyone’s help to make this event a success. If you have the desire to participate in the “Walk of Faith”, but are not able to do the walking yourself, you can select a “Designated Walker” who will do the walking for you, while you concentrate on identifying your sponsors and raising the dollars.

Can’t you see it now, on Saturday, August 2nd, 2008 more than three hundred NBCF marchers will dispatch from The Renton High School en route to Lindberg High School and from Lindberg High School to the new site. We will walk through the streets of Renton wearing bright colored T-Shirts, singing songs of faith, and holding up bold signs that say everything from “God is always ready to start over” to “We are all family, and family takes care of family”. We will be the talk of the town! And in the process, together we will raise more than $300,000 that we absolutely need to help us successfully complete the Phase I renovations. Together, and only together, we can and will make this “Walk of Faith” one of the most memorable and gainful days in the brief history of the New Beginnings Christian Fellowship.

Won’t you join us for the “Walk of Faith”

Walk of Faith Summary and Guidelines

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Our walk-of-faith is a fun and fit activity for the entire congregation to participate. The walk will begin at the site of our 1st NBCF service, which was held on August 7th, 2005 at the Renton High School Gymnasium. We will walk to Lindbergh High School, which is where NBCF relocated after outgrowing Renton High School. The last leg of our walk will be from Lindberg High School to the future site of the NBCF Worship and Family Life Center at 19300 108 Ave SE, formerly known as the Renton Athletic Club. The walk will be approximately 8 miles in total distance. We are asking all able persons to walk the distance that they are capable of without causing harm to themselves. You may walk all or a portion of the distance. If you cannot walk along with us, you may designate someone to walk for you and cheer for them along the way. Drinks will be provided along the route, with a food at the finish line, and each participant will receive a walk-of faith T-shirt.

Our goal is to help in the fundraising efforts to fund the building expenses of the new NBCF property and land development, which ultimately allow us as a church family to support the ministries and outreach of NBCF. We hope that each member of the NBCF family will participate in the walk-of -faith to the best of their ability. Our goal is for each member to raise $1,000.00 from outside the congregation from their friends, family, coworkers and neighbors. Thank you very much for your participation! We’re excited to see how God will bless us as we walk together in faith.

Rules

1. Members may start collecting pledges as soon as they receive the pledge sheets. Reminder: Pledge sheets should to be turned in before the walk-of-faith day, Saturday, August 2nd, 2008. On a weekly basis, please turn in all donations with their pledge sheets collected from pledge sheets to the NBCF Rising Star Book Store. You will be given a new pledge envelope so that you may continue to raise pledges for the Walk of Faith.

2. Pledges may be made by anyone. However, participants are requested not to ask for pledges from NBCF members. Ask neighbors, friends, family members, and coworkers. Please ask everyone who pledges if their company has a matching gift fund policy.

3. Each sponsor making a pledge should write their name, address, e-mail, and pledge amount. Collect donations at the time of pledge and turn them in that week.

4. On walk-of –faith day, each member will walk as many miles as possible. Please consult your doctor and begin walking on a regular basis to prepare. If you wish to receive pledges but are unable to walk, you may designate someone to walk your behalf.

5. Participants are encouraged to wear hats and sunscreen and prepare for hot or rainy weather.

We look forward to all our participants having a great time as we raise funds for the Worship and Family Life center and introduce our church to the neighborhood. For questions or concerns, or to volunteer, call the church office at 253.520.6673 or e-mail us at nbcfwalkoffaith(at)gmail.com.
